Hilltop churches in the Slovenian landscape

Small white churches punctuate Slovenia’s countryside. Often standing on hilltops, they give the surrounding fields, forests and mountains a clear focal point.

We photographed Sveti Tomaž, Sveti Jakob, St Peter above Begunje, St Primož and the church on Lake Bled’s island. We also stopped at less familiar churches beside the road, sometimes without knowing their names.

I enjoyed the relationship between the buildings and the landscape as much as the architecture itself. This series follows those encounters, from well-known viewpoints to unplanned roadside discoveries.
