Kinderdijk: photographing the Dutch windmills

The windmills at Kinderdijk are close enough to home for a short photography trip. I went to explore the familiar Dutch landscape and find my own compositions along the water.

The weather was unremarkable and the sky lacked the colour I had hoped for. Instead, I concentrated on the windmills, their spacing and their relationship with the surrounding waterways.

One photograph from the session was selected for the Holland Calendar 2017. It was a welcome reminder that a successful landscape photograph does not always depend on a dramatic sky.
